My practice has progressed into my final year of studying BA Photography, into an exploration of the mundane and its beauty within the everyday. My current work involves the childhood home, and the experience of suburbia, which is reflected upon in my current writing of my dissertation.
In the 251 project I have highlighted visually exciting aspects of the banal, in the area of Elephant and Castle, through the use of imagery situated near the 251 building, and also with text, taken from conversations I heard in the local area.
The choice of photographs, for example the full and empty pints from a local pub, alongside the choice of conversation underneath, or beside the image evokes a sense of story telling. Therefore a sense of community is explored through the use of text, and beside the photographs I took, there is a sense of how beautiful the everyday can be. Also how this can go unnoticed, which I would encourage the tenants viewing my work, to consider how their area can be visually exciting.
The title derives from a section of conversation I heard in the second to last image, ‘At the end of the day, I think we’re doing the right thing,’ taken out of context. I think this statement can be taken however the viewer wishes, and by shortening this section of conversation for the title of the works, I believe I have alluded to the comfort and familiarity of going home, at the end of the day, like the tenants themselves returning to their new home, where my works will be situated.
