Niaz Maleknia

I was born in Iran in 1969 and left at the outbreak of the Revolution in 1979. Escaping in the middle of the night to come to London. I studied English Literature at London University and went on to teach for many years. Photography has always interested me, particularly the works of Eggleston and Friedlander. I like taking photographs of things which one may not notice. Things that simply do not matter. I have a particular interest in Documentary Photography. I recently completed the Post Graduate Diploma in Photography at London College of Communication.

Elephant and Castle is both beautiful and ugly. It has a sense of attractiveness through its strong architecture. For 251 I wanted to show elements of the new and old, and the beauty and ugliness of the area. I took photos of the details from the past and blended them with images from the present. The work is layered, which reflects the layers of diversity of Elephant and Castle.
